Shoot: Footage

Over the last week I have been going through the footage that has been shot and putting it all together in order to achieve some of the footage. I have looked at adding titles which will be used in the final cut but have not used the style in which we have discussed in th pitch for the print research and will therefore include these in the final cut. At the minute me and Beth are ahead of schedule in terms of the shoot and so I have been spending a good amount of time on the footage we have completed at the moment.

At the weekend I will be shooting some further footage for the trailer which is in a different location to the last, Next week I will spend time editing this in order to get a feel of the full trailer.
For the footage editied I feel some of it is not to the best pottential and therefore I have decided to maybe re-shoot or add more footage. I also may go back to the location of the forrest to get a established shot to set the scene in the beginning of the trailer. This means that a variety of shots can be used for the trailer and this can further pursue our chances of producing a better trailer and higher level for this work.

Here is the footage I have edited so far. The titles used in this trailer are just temporary as me and Beth are currently editing and creating titles and so I have added some simple temporary ones for now.

Shoot: Delay and Next Step

At the weekend I was planning to shoot for the rest of our project however  I was very ill on Sunday and was not unto going outside and therefore have delayed it up until I am well enough.  However I have completed a voice over for the trailer and will be editing this into the footage we have completed at the moment.

Me and Beth discussed today that the delay will still mean we will be completed on time, we have 2 weeks to finish the fine cut of the trailer and have very much edited and uploaded half of it and feel in a very good position. I feel that the end of there trailer needs to have the most emphasise in terms of content and time as the end is going to the fast pace and be the last detail of the trailer in which the audience will see.

Me and Beth have also decided in tomorrow's lesson to do a recording of how we feel the research, planning and shoot are going so far, this is so we can include more of a audio discussion to our blog and also review our current process in comparison to our AS project.

Planning: Call Sheet and Log Sheet

This is the Shooting Schedule, Call Sheets and Log Sheet which will be used for the first day of shooting in October.

This is the call sheets and logging sheets for the forrest scene in which i find went really well, the location and setting was great and the time in which it was done in was also very effective. The actors were a great help and I feel this will be a key scene for the trailer. The use of the logging sheet shows professional aspect to filming and will also be a great help in editing as a lot of shots were taken with some actors being young children.

Planning: Storyboard

This the storyboard I have completed which includes pictures, time scale of shots, dialogue, music, shot type and angle and any other special effects for for each shot.

The first shot from the storyboard is a close up of the floor in which the effect of is saying that there is a camera on the floor. The sound effects heard in this is of a young child who is playing with the camera. This is to give the effect of the camera being a prop to be used within the trailer and to set the setting for the flashback. The shot is to use the effect of black and white in order to be show to the audience of this certain shot being in the past as it is many years ago in the young boys life. This stoaryboard page continues this flashbakc of the young boy is then running and shoting 'Mummy' with the camera held at angle and shaking as to say that the boy has picked up the camera. The boy then runs thorught a door and at the end of the room  a person can be seen to be lieing on the floor. They are look unconscius but the boy further tries to wake them up by shaking them and then it fades to black.

This one shows the crying of the boy which is currently in the present in a forest, this would then bring in the gloomy voiceover of the boy where it is echoed in the background. This page shows the shot of the boy hearing these and covering his ears. I also decided after scanning them in that a edited blur would be included with a change of location to a graveyard where the boy will be at its parents grave. This forrest scene is linked to the research done into The Children where a number of children are in a forrest running.

This again shows the echoing voiceover of and the boy this time begins to run as he can. In this I will include some close up and dark shots in order to go with the conventions of the horror.

This then shows the change happen with just a red screen shown in order to show blood and gore without the audience actually seeing what has happened. This can be seen from the research done into the Jennfifers BOdy and also The Omen having a red screen. This also fits well with the certificate given for the trailer as it is narrowed down from the film The Children which is an 18.

Genre

I have been asked to talk about how this storyboard links into a number of aspects in media firstly being media. This is shown firstly with the use of a black screen though the fading and in the previous post where  me and Beth have decided to use red, black and white as the titles which links to the research I done into the The Children and also Jenfifers BOdy all using these colours. We also looked at how the slow pace at the start which I can link closely to the The Omen with the light and the happy family at the start until it becomes dark and fast pace at the end. The gloomy sounds have been used from the voice over in the sotryborad which Beth said she found common in the research she done into The Others. In terms of miss en scene we have seen that little colour is used in clothing which is why in the production schedule it shows that the actors have been told to wear dark colours. We looked at the setting of a number of films in which are isolated in typical pyscoilgical horrors especially involving children and in this case is he next stage in finding the location where we have an empty room, graveyard and a potential forest also. We have shown for the editing to be fast pace and the use of black and white conventions is what i have researched from the Jennifers BOdy and is shown in our flashback.

Narrative

In the narrative media aspect of the storyboard it shows that we want to take a linear conventional approach as discussed in one of my posts earlier. This will mean a start, middle and an end which most trailers research both me and Beth found this is the case. However we want to make a twist to the approach of the Levis Stratus theory from the bad and goof to the dark and light in which the audience don't know who is villain and who is innocent within the boy. This means a unique trailer in which will appeal to the audience.

Audience

From this we have decided upon a 12/15 certificate from the storyboard as a number research i have done such as into The Children in which the use of dripping blood and the forrest has been used from is too gory; this is therefore an 18 and narrowing this down will mean it is 12-15 for ours. We find this an appropriate age for the trailer in order to appeal and also receive a good amount of audience feedback.

Representation

In terms of representation we want to show the sympathy side to the young boy of losing his parents but have a twist to it where the audience also feel threat and despise the boy towards the end. This can be seen from the young boy, lost parents which automatically shows symathty from the audience. This will contradict and challenge the conventions of a normal child pyscolgical horror but also means that as a trailer too much does not need to be revealed in order to gain attraction into the audience wanting to see the film.

Planning: Storyboard

Today me and Beth have discussed our production and filming for the trailer. We have reviewed the storyline and storyboard which have orgainally had in place and have also considered making some changes. We feel that the current storyboard is revealing the storyline of the indentional film to be made. I feel that the trailer needs to not reveal all the storyline and needs to leave the audeince hanging which is what the overall purpose of a trailer is to do. From this we have decided to shoot the flashback, forest and the scene in whcih the boy becomes appartently deranged. This will show the audience sympathsising towards the boy in the start from the death of his parents but then when becoming deranged becoming to hate him.

Planning: Storyboard

Over the last few days I have been designing and creating a storyboard for our project. I have decided to create a detailed storyboard including the characters and props in each shot. Also the effects, time length, type of shot and movement of the shot and any otehr information to for each shot. This means that when shooting for the trailer it is clear as to what needs to be done for each shoot and this gives a organised set up. This will be scanned and uploaded to the blog by Thrusday.

Me and Beth are now producing and creating a prodcution schedule, this includes details of each character, what scenes they are in , where they are, what they need and costumes they need. Also include is the location descriptions including the times avaliable, characters, scenes required for and any additional information. Also in the plan is a shooting schedule for the shooting days and a call sheet for each day. These will all be completed and distributed to characters and the directors by the end of this week. The next two lessons me and Beth will be discussing avaliability of time, organising the amount of time we have to shoot and other information for planing. Here is a un filled version of the plan.

Me and Beth are prepared to complete are planning by the end of this week so that next week before half term we can discuss what needs to be shot and when. We are planning to shoot the majoroty of the footage in the week we have off so we have enough time for editing. As we expereinced in our foundation AS footage of having to re-shoot in a little space of time we don't what to repeat this and therefore are planning to shoot in advance and have plenty of time to deal with production problems is neccessary.

Exam: Comparison and Contrast to Foundation Portiofolio

Alongside my the advanced portifolio project I also need to be fully prepared for the exam next year which has a significant amount of content to do with the AS project and A2 project. Firstly within the exam one of the sections is how one of my projects either being the A2 or AS has met connotations of real media projects. This will allow me to develop the aspect of reviewing how well my work has become and if the effect i was intending to get has been acheived.  This means that I need to closely analyse the impact of the msitakes and faults in the AS level to my A2 project and how I have developed my skills in planning and research and the detail of the project to meet real media conventions. I feel at the moment the research of my A2 is much more detailed than it was for my AS, I have looked considerable more at the way in which certain shots can cause an effect on the audience and how it fits into the conventions of this genre being horror.

2- Treatment

The technical requirements for this project will be a digital video camera for shooting the trailer, commentaries and back stage footage for the project . Also a digital stills camera will be used to take images of locations when planing for the shoot and for the poster and magazine cover. The digital video software will also be necessary in editing the trailer and also to edit images for the print products. We have found and ensured these will be available for our project. Here is the ones we will be using
As shown in the pitch we have decided we need to use other actors and people in for the production of the trailer and therefore need to find people who will fit into the roles of the characters in the trailer. From the question and answer of the pitch we found that the link between the print and video is very clear with our fonts and colours but we need to focus the idea of creating the effect we wish to have throughout the trailer.
The time we have available is to form a fine cut by the end of November and the final cut for the end of term in December.  Me and Beth therefore feel we want to spend a good amount of time on the shoot compared to our AS in which we feel was rushed, we have decided to shoot early and in advanced in order to be successful in completion on the deadline.

The possible risk to health and safety is of the actors and crew in which we plan to shoot a forrest, and therefore need to ensure the area is safe. For this we will be emailing the location owners as to whether the area can be used and if it is safe, we will also visit the location before hand in order to ensure it is safe for shooting.

The possible problems which can occur with our project is the risk of relying on other people for the production and helping in the trailer. This may also mean that we need to have effective time management in order to be able to meet the deadline and not need to change the idea and plot of the trailer. Another problem which may occur like in our AS project is losing footage of the quality of footage and therefore needing to re-shoot.  This therefore is why me and Beth have decided to shoot very early in order to not repeated this mistake and risk.

For documentation of the trailer we will include planning paperwork of production schedule, storyboards, call sheets, logging sheets and plans for the crew and actors in order to communicate with the team effectively and be prepared for the shoot. Over the next few weeks we will be completing this documentation.

We have also discussed the contingency plans which will include a 5 second gap at the begining each shot and at the end in order for each clip to flow through and not be cut of where sound can come in. Each scene will also be shot more than once in order for the shoot to have back up any footage is lost. Along with the trailer footage backstage footage or making of the trailer will also be included in order for an extra technological video to be included in out prject and also to be contiously follow the set and arranged of how real media trailer or film is made.

2- Treatment

Our next task is to finalise the project outline based on the pitch we completed and form a detailed treatment for the trailer. It is essential to understand and use other people int he production of a trailer as that is what happens in reality , however consideration needs to be taken in their health, clarify roles ad responsibilities, terms and deadlines. This may cause problems in terms of production and we need to be therefore be prepared of change that will be a key part when evaluating our project.  We need to blog:
- Details of technological requirements for production and post-production
- Personnel requirements for production and post-production
- Time available
- Budget available
- Possible risks to health and safety of production crew, actors and the public
- Possible problems

We must create a number of documentations of;
- Resource and budgetary information
- Resource planning documents
- Production schedules
- Risk assessments
- Contingency plans
- Communication paperwork for team

Title

From the pitch preparation we had come with two names in which we have decided the title of the film is to be Deranged in which we have used to brand our three media products. We have discussed and looked at the font style we want to show this title and Beth has completed a logo for the title along with the branding.  Here it is:

I think the use of conventions found in the research of using black, white and red has been used through this title and is clearly evident to the audience that it is is of a horror/thriller film. We asked a number of people what they thought of the tittle and many said it was very effective with the use of black against the red which further emphasises the contrast of the them both.  Me and Beth have decided to have our titles to the trailer like this and therefore will slowly create these when we have time in lessons in order to be prepared on finishing on the deadline.

Poster Example

Over the past lesson I have been creating an example and some ideas for a poster of our trailer in which we feel will be useful when coming to create these. I created this is Publisher and spend a lot of time with the images and editing them to get the effect I wanted.  Here it is:

I will look later into getting audience feedback in order to see if it can be a successful print product for a trailer and what improvements could be made to it. I feel the poster can be improved further as it looks very dull, the contrast of the black and white could be decreased in order to add more colour to the poster. However despite this the title in red really stands out and the use of a black and white image imphaisese the titel further to be seen by the audience. I feel that rather than this for a poster an digital image of the young boy may be more effective. The poster will also need to include release date, further information such as director, actors and production logo and a tagline which we stated would be include in our pitch.

1- Pitch Presentation and Evaluation

At first we discussed the research we done in order to establish the genre we haven chosen being a horror/psychological. Firstly audience feedback was done with a number of people in order to decide which genre was the most popular. This research was done amount the age range of 15- 17 as it is also the audience we feel will be more appropriate for our project. This allowed us to determine the sort of target audience for the trailer and the print products. Along with this we also looked at the most recent films which we found influence from trailer such as Paranormal Activity which was just released while we were looking for ideas. Also we found that a horror/thriller allowed a chance for us to explore camerawork and also editing, to give an feel of psychological which would like to portray in the trailer. With this we also felt we could link it to our AS project which was also a similar genre; this therefore would allow use to extend and develop our skills also.

From the research we came to a conclusion of the idea in which the trailer and the print products would be based on. Especially from a number of psychological child films we found they were orphans which is what we have decided to do. Within this we decided that in the trailer a change will happen from the light to the dark, happy to sad taking into consideration the Levis Stratus theory of narrative.

We showed the research we did into conventions of a horror film such as Paranormal activity was shown to emphases the Bloody Mary idea. The use of a red screen from The Children and The Omen. We discussed closely effect of the titles and colour on a trailer which was mainly conventional to red, white and black. We also talked about the sound we were going to included such as echo, screams and gloomy music to set the scene.

We then discussed the poster and magazine of for the trailer in which the conventions of the research we did was also shown. Such as the main character in the Jennifers Body and the use of tagline and actors credits was also shown.

Today me and Beth presented our pitch to the rest of the class. Here is the Powerpoint which we discussed yesterday.

http://vimeo.com/29329640

This is the link to the video which recorded our presentation of the pitch.

As a task we have decided to review our pitch through how we felt it went. From the pitch we were asked questions on how the trailer was to link in with both the print products of the magazine cover and film poster.

The first question we were asked was how we were going to make the scary child in which we said a number of red shots would emphases the blood without actually showing this. I said that the film The Children was an 18 which showed actual killing and therefore as ours was a 15 we will decide to emphasise death with a red screen rather than showing the killing. This can ultimately have the same effect as seeing something . This idea was found from my research into the Jennfiers body with a specific shot of the girl killing someone and the screen going to red showing the death.

We said in this that the boy would be the symbol of the film which shows why we will be showing him in the poster and magazine.

In this presentation we also asked of more detail on the plot of the film which i think we didn't clearly explain in the presentation. We then then gave examples of shots we were going to include such as the initial idea of a graveyard and a change happening but the audience being not shown as to how that change happened. Again we said the use of red and blood shown in the The Omen of dripping blood.

Also asked was the target audience of the film which we said would be a 12/15 range and this was again justified from the some of the research we done in to 18 films such as The Children; we didn't want it to be too gory and therefore we also explained how this would allow use to narrow down the use of gory scenes to an extend.

We were also asked on audiences and we wanted to portray a sense of either being threatened by the child or sympathetic towards them in terms of the trailer given the circumstances the child was in. We also said we wanted to keep the audience in suspense by only showing the start and end but not showing what actual happened to the boy in the middle. This is something I emphasised as shown in the presentation video so that the full film wasn't given away.

Within the video it also shows how immediately the audience we were pitching to touched on the message we want to portray in the film of how can it be justified and okay for a child to do this given the situation or something which has happened to them. We also said how we were going to form a supernatural aspect to it in order for the audience to not relate it too much to reality but still be able to get the message we want to portray.

We were told we have a a very strong image across all three products including film and print. I think we did very well in terms of the pitch but we could have given more details and been specific of the plot and the narrative of the trailer. I have now decided to create a post on narrative in order to justify why we have chosen certain aspects in order to improve this.

Genre

As we have learned throughout the past 2 years that genre in any media product is a very important aspect in informing the audience and conveying what they think of the product. Therefore we have discussed the trailers in terms of genre and how each type of genre has certain conventions in order to be successful in attracting the target audience. For example a romantic trailer won't have a dark and gloomy setting where a as a thriller or horror film will. The genre therefore sets the mood and setting to the audience and is the result of attracting them to watch further. As we have discussed we are having a horror/thriller trailer and need to establish the conventions in getting the target audience to be attracted the film.

Within the research I have found some of these being; the use of black screen with white titles, red background to emphasise blood and danger, a slow pace to the trailer start and a very fast pace towards the end, screams and gloomy sounds.  In terms of miss en scene clothing is dark and no colours are used, there props which are dangerous and cause fear such as knives, the setting is often isolated and i terms of editing black and white is often used.

Narrative

Today we discussed in class Narrative in the media by firstly identifying what it is. It is a chain of events in a cause of effect relationship accuracy in space and time.  It is a combination of the plot(how it happened) and the story(what happens) and the process of balancing what we see, hear and what we assume. The part of assuming is very important in our trailer in order to ensure the audience assumes something has happened to the young boy in order to make him deranged. For our trailer we have decided to have a linear conventional narrative having a start, middle and end as it means that the audience will not get confused with it and is also the most popular form of narrative to use in trailers as shown in the research. The majority of audiences also respond better to this structure.
For our trailer we are kind of twisting the theory of Levis Stratus having contrasts of bad and good but having these as the same person.  This will therefore form a unique trailer and plot for the audience to be attracted to.

Audience

Today's lesson we discussed and looked at audiences. The majority of audiences are described broadly by demographics such as concrete ideas, information that can be found; class, gender, age and geography and psychographics such as needs and desires. The market of audiences is usaul divded into a number of different types such as the genre in terms of soap addicts and C4 viewers, mass audiences and niche audiences who are profitable for advertising.

This idea of audience needs to be looked into for our trailer in order to know what sort of conventions and ideas the target audiences.  Me and Beth have been discussing the audience in which we will target for our trailer which is teenagers between the age of 15-18. This is because it is a target audience in which we feel has been successful with a number of recent films such as paranormal activity which is a very popular low budget film. This is the sort of approach we need to take with our project. We also have the advantage of being int his age range ourselves meaning we can connect with the trailer and have a number of people look at it when we need real target audience feedback. Me and Beth also feel that in our AS project we had a much lower target audience being a 12A and therefore we want to extend out skills and experience by producing a trailer for   much higher certificate of target audience.

Representation

Representation relates to the presenting of reality in the media. When studying representation, what has been constructed and how audiences receive and consume them are looked at. In many situations the knowledge of people and issues will come from the media which makes representations very important. It is usually impossible for any representation to be unbiased in any way which gives great power and responsibility to media institutions. Newspapers in particular are often accused of strating moreal panics by the way they represent people or groups.

Representation in the media are oftne broken into social groups which are; age, disability, gender, socio-economic grouping, race, nationality and sexuality.

Stereotypes are characters in media text who are classed as types rather than people. Childrens media texts often make extensive use of stereotypes because they enable a young audience to identify very quickly with the action and situation. Stereotypes are usually represent an entire social group in a single character.

Equally there are particular stereotypes which we asscioate with certain things such as genre where are certain character fits into a certain genre; such as a unattractive women would not be found in a Hollywood movie.

I have found this useful for my research in order to look how the genre we propose to use will ascertain representations percieved to the audience. In terms of the plan we need to think how we want each character and the trailer as a whole to be presented to the audience.  While planning for our pitch we though a lot about how we want to represent in the trailer being the young boy, we would like to persuade and implemented to the audience a feel of sympathy to the young boy in the start of the trailer but feel hatred and fear of if towards the end; however we wish to do this without revealing too much of what actually happened to him in the trailer in order to attract the audience to actually see the film.

1- Pitch Planning

Today me and Beth have been planning for our pitch , we have our starting to produce a Powerpoint presentation in order to include the research we have conducted and made our decisions. We also included the research we did into the target audience favourite genre of film from a questionnaire. We have also created some names and fonts for our film in which we will include.  Even though they are not definite I have included pictures of some of locations we plan to shoot in order to ensure the group we feel committed to our project. We recently spend lunchtime discussing the Powerpoint and how we would justify are project to the team. We looked at why we have chosen certain locations or storyline in order to fit within the genre we have selected. We selected a number of researched films in order to present to the team an image of how we would like our trailer to look like. I have also decided to fully ensure that the magazine and poster are consitent and link with he trailer and therefore Beth has begun to create example titles for the trailer, poster and magazine.

1- Pitch

As we have completed all the research and development of the project we have been given our first task of presenting our idea to an audience in terms of a pitch. We will be presenting it front of our peers also doing this project and teacher being the financier who we need to persuade to back our project is worthwhile. We will have 5 minutes to present 10 minutes for the group to ask questions of our idea.  We will include evidence of this by being filmed during the presentation on our blog.  The pitch must:

- Clearly describe the proposed idea and its purpose as linked to brief
- How the Package will look like
- Present results of research to the audience and existent products, explaining -  -- How the project will link to these
- Show how the research and development has informed creative decisions
- Justify decisions based on genre, form and audience
- Demonstrate the viability of the proposed ideas.

We will be presenting our pitch on Thursday.

Advanced Portfolio

Today we were given a booklet of all the information in which we needed to include in our project and what we need to do to achieve in marks in the top levels. To achieve the best marks in this unit we should
-       Demonstrate thoroughness and efficiency in planning and project management, monitoring production activity with close reference to objectives and schedules, and meeting deadlines with consistent accuracy; utilize through paperwork and work with initiative and independence at all stages.
-       Provide a finished media product that achieves successfully the intentions set out by the brief and which has a clear relevance and appeal to its proposed audience.
-       Provide a finished media product that shows creativity and flair in its realization, with sophisticated an creative use of appropriate techniques and technology in production ad postproduction.

The unit should include evidence of:
1)   Planning of the project set out in the brief
2)   Achievement of the intentions set out in the brief
3)   Understanding and use of production and pot-production technology and techniques to create a media product.

Research: Let Me In

I have also researched into a more recent trailer which will allow a more advanced and recent research for my advanced A2 portfolio.
Let Me In is a 2010 American romantic horror film[5] directed by Matt Reeves and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloƫ Grace Moretz. It is based on the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In directed by Tomas Alfredson, and the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It tells the story of a bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with a vampire child in a New Mexico town in the early 1980s. The film made $24,145,613 at the box office.

This trailer first like many starts with the production logo, I think in our trailer we have also decided to use the production logo in the start of the trailer.

The titles of this trailer like many uses the contrast effect of white against a black background. It makes it bold and stand out to the audience, and also convince them it is a horror film.

I also like this effect of a tunnel with a person sitting on the end, it makes it seem isolated and the audience are attracted as to why this person is sitting there.

Research: The Ring

Since me and Beth have decided the plot of our trailer I have further done some more research and found some trailers of films in which are relevant and useful to ours. I have looked at certain shots and techniques in which we would like to see in out trailer to see the effect and impact it can have on the rest of the trailer and audience.

The Ring is a 2002 American psychological horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson. It is a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror film Ring.
Both films are based on Koji Suzuki's novel Ring and focus on mysterious cursed videotape, which contains a seemingly random series of disturbing images. After watching the tape, the viewer receives a phone call in which a girl's spooky voice announces that the viewer will die in seven days. The film was a critical and commercial success.
Firstly in the trailer a white glowing circle like a ring appears against a black background. This immediately informs the audience that the film has some contrast with it in white and black representing evil and good. This again is a very popular convention to use in thriller/horror films and have already implemented this into our logo.

This idea of the fuzzy screen I feel can be used in our trailer, this has an effect by making the trailer or certain shot seem old and this is also an effect that we need in the start of the trailer.

I also like the use of the titles in front of shots like this one used, it seems unique and could be a possibility in our trailer in order to emphasis both the shots and titles to the audience.

The use of a dark room and closed door is also another convention used in many horror/thriller trailers to form a sense of gloominess and isolation in which this sort of shot will be useful in our trailer.

I really like the use of this type of shot being a low angle, it creates a sense of power to the audience and the use of the dark and gloomy atmosphere also further reassures the audience that it is a horror movie. Also the use of this shot draws the audience in further and wanting them to know the more powerful person is and why.
The use of the fuzzy screen with a girl figure behind it is a really good effect in attracting the audience of who this figure is. This shot has an effect of stating that something from the past is coming back and this will be an effective technique to use in our trailer.

Planning
