Research and Development

Over the next six weeks we have to complete our research and development project. I need to have at least 6 blog entries with detailed research into genre of a film trailer, film poster and a the front cover of a film magazine by the end of the summer. The research task should include an artist or artists within the genre we have chosen and look into an in-depth study of a selection of music videos and associated products. I need to look into the choices, impact on the audience and the effect of the image of music from genre, narrative, audience, representation and media language. Also should include any effects or ideas I would to use in my own project. The development task includes a choose of song by the artist or artists researched and shooting and editing a short video covering the first minute of the song of choose.

From this task I should achieve how to capture an appropriate mood and concept for the song, exploring how to edit music and narrative according to the conventions of the research conducted. I will complete the research by Monday 11th July, shoot the footage and have it edited and uploaded to my blog by Friday 23rd July.

Project

We have chosen the teaser trailer for the media coursework as we have some experience from the AS project of film making and also a trailer will allow our project to be experimented with in terms of genre and conventions along with it.
Today we were shown a trailer and identified the conventions needed in a trailer in order for it to be seen as a certain genre from an audience’s point of view.
We need to look at the type of text in a trailer such as in a horror red connotes blood where as in a comedy a big bright white may be more effective in the audience identifying which genre it is. Also need to look at the use of editing such as slow motion which can have a constant effect on the image the audience receive of the trailer and how attracted they are to go and see the film. The music also connotes the genre such as suspense music will be more suited to a horror than a comedy film. Therefore for the trailer we must look when decided what genre to go with, how researched trailers have certain connotations within it to be a certain genre.

Audience

Today we looked at audience which I must relate to in the second question of section A in the exam. We looked at how audiences are broadly described by demographics which is information that can be found such as class, gender, age and geography or psychographics which are needs and desires uch as what they want.
I need to look at when considering the audience of my project what sort of genre they may prefer and more likely to be attracted, the size of the audience such as a niche or mas audience and also the type of advertisng in order to reach the audience I intend to.

The four questions

Throughout the research and shooting process I need to think about these 4 questions in order to be able to write a detailed evaluation for my footage;

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Narrative

Today we looked into narrative within films and music. From this we disussed what narrative is which is a chain of events. From this lesson I need to decide whether I would like to use a linear narrative or a non linear narrative. Each of this have benefits and issues for the audience. We also looked into what the majority of audiences respond to which is ; beginning, middle and end, a defininty hero and villan, clear problem and closure that they are happy with. Also looked into the Levis Stratus theory of the contradictions such as good/bad, beautiful/ugly and witty/humourless and the tordorus theory which includes the equilibruim at the start, disequilibruim is when something happens and the new equilibruim being the end.

When looking into the structure of my project I need to look into how each of these may be used and the effect it has on how appealing my footage will  be to my audience.

Genre

Today in the lesson we discussed about genre within films and music videos. I found this a very intereseting lesson to think about the type of genre I would like to use in my project and how a certain genre may be much harder to convince a audience it is that genre such as a horror may have much more music and suspense than a comedy or more happy video.

A2 Course

For the A2 of my Media Studies we have to produce a main and ancillary text and electronic format of the research and planning. Also like the AS project evaluate the project on the blog, presentation, interview and any other evaluation method.
The project also links in to the section A of the exam where there are two compulsory questions, The first requires me to describe and evaluate my skills development over the course of their production work from AS to A2. I must relate to digital technology, creativity, research and planning, post-production and using conventions from real media texts within my answer. The second I must identify one of my own project and evaluate it in relation to one theoretical concept. In this I must relate to genre, narrative, representation. audience and media language.

Welcome

This is my A2 blog!!!
